Jeruzalem

Embroidered with a golden thread, Jeruzalem Slovenia is a treasure of our country; with its holy name, energy lines, wine road with quality white and red wines, outstanding viewpoints overlooking three countries - Austria, Hungary and Croatia - and a pilgrimage church, the city justifies its name as a heavenly place. In the 12th century, crusaders passed through the city on their way to what is now the Middle East of Jerusalem.

The 17th-century Cerkev Žalostne Matere božje (Church of the Sorrowful Mother of God) glows like a beacon over the dark green ocean of the surrounding hills with their dense vineyards and testifies to the town's reputation as a must-see. The church was once a Crusader chapel, but was later gradually converted into a Baroque church. Jeruzalem was given to the Crusaders by Frederick of Ptuj, but the town remained a pilgrimage site. On the main altar hangs a painting of the Virgin Mary, said to have been brought here by the Crusaders and pilgrims in the 12th century in thanksgiving for their return from the Holy Land. Jeruzalem is linked to the legend that in 1664 (at the time of the famous Battle of Saint Gotthard), women from the surrounding villages outwitted the Turkish army on the Babji klanec.
